about

Born of Obsidian is the first full length release by Kurokuma since their inception. This aural codex represents the sum of the Sheffield-based entity’s victories, struggles and experiences thus far.

The album’s five tracks are thematically bound, with each allegorically channeled through Mesoamerican myth and blood-soaked history. The result is a savage album, unmoored from the spirit of the age, summoning an essence at once unseeing yet all-knowing.

Now dig beneath the thin crust of civilisation, and bear witness to the blood of the earth.

QUOTES:

"Surely Born of Obsidian is destined for cult status." - Aural Aggravation

"The more you dig into this album, the more you find, as if you were an archaeologist on an expedition to discover long-forgotten cities. 9.5/10" - Diaries of Doom

"An inventive, electrifying and absolutely unforgettable listen." - Metal Hammer

"Kurokuma’s sludge is of a suitably mind-altering strain to open a ritualistic channel through space and time on this compelling curio." - Kerrang!

"One of the most daring, exciting and adventurous debut releases the UK sludge/doom/stoner metal scene has seen in years." - Outlaws of the Sun

"Born of Obsidian is a record that understands the balance between weighty riffs and weighty emotions, and therefore is spellbinding." - The Killchain Blog

"The lyrics and music fit perfectly together thematically, successfully hypnotizing the listener and causing forty minutes to pass in the blink of an eye." - A Certain Taste

"Kurokuma’s grinding bass and guitar lines tear through the mind while the searing vocals turn one’s third eye inside out." - Astral Noize

"Kurokuma draw parallels between their own hallucinogenic metal and the rituals of the ancients as a means of stressing the significance of psychedelic communion." - Invisible Oranges

"This is a top 10 of 2022 contender! 4.5/5" - Metal Epidemic

"With their unique concept and equally unique sound, Born of Obsidian is an album unlike any other. 9/10" - Distorted Sound

"This is chock full of dancing rhythms, crushing riffs, soaring sonics and smoke drenched neck wreckers. Bloody marvellous. 9/10" - Ave Noctum

"This is a record which is as morbidly hypnotic as it is monstrously heavy." - No Clean Singing

"Born of Obsidian is a rarefied treat, one which only grows more potent over time. Very highly recommended." - Wonderbox Metal

"While the majority of concept albums serve to tell a narrative, this record serves as the direct conduit back into Aztec and Olmec cultures." - Noizze
